Marriage Licenses

Probate Court issues marriage licenses. Marriage licenses issued in Williamsburg County date back to 1911. To obtain a marriage license, both applicants must appear together.

Identification

Two forms of identification are required. The first form of identification that is required is your driver’s license or state-issued identification card. The second form of identification shall be one of the following:

  • Certified copy of your birth certificate
  • Military identification
  • Passport
  • Social security card
  • Voter’s registration card

Minor Applicants

Minor applicants must be at least 16 years of age and must have parental consent and present a certified or original birth certificate. The parents of the minor(s) must provide identification.

Waiting Period

There is a mandatory 24-hour waiting period that is required by law.

Fees

The fee for a marriage license is $40. A duplicate license due to damage or loss prior to the ceremony will cost $30.

Marriage Ceremonies

Effective November 1, 2014, Probate Court will no longer perform Marriage Ceremonies in the office due to the enormous caseload and limited staff operating the Kingstree office and Hemingway Office. You can purchase a Marriage License from Probate Court, and have the ceremony performed by a Minister, South Carolina Notary Public, or other authorized Official.
